To begin with, the energy of Melody and Charlie Luepke, who hatched this idea as a memorial to Melody’s sister Heather. They are dedicated to the spirit of this shop, as described in its Mission Statement: “Flying Pig Thrift exists to honor Heather Valdez by providing a unique, energizing, and a downright fun nonprofit cooperative where shoppers can find thrifty treasures while benefiting local nonprofits.”
Melody and Charlie are involved in every aspect of Flying Pig Thrift: from assembling shelves to setting up displays to sorting out books, they are a hands-on duo. Not only are they steady donators to the shop, they are regular customers too. As avid thrifters themselves, they are committed to providing the kind of shopping experience that will bring folks back for more.
Melody especially enjoys becoming a neighborhood fixture and knows the importance of relating to both new and steady customers. She also works tirelessly to find volunteers and will not hesitate to spread the word about Flying Pig Thrift.
Charlie is ready and able to pick up furniture and likes to keep the record collection interesting. He is quite dedicated; he once saw an available dining room set on a boulevard and loaded it all into his pickup truck by himself. As a musician, he also enjoys setting up live music for events at Flying Pig Thrift.
And they both believe in the value of recycling and giving back by donating the shop’s profits. They are pleased to both benefit both the earth and worthy nonprofits.
Next time you’re in the shop, stop and say HOWDY! There is a strong chance that one or both of them will be at the shop.
